Storage Guidelines

All pet food must be stored in a dry, cool place and sealed to reduce the chance of mildew spoilage and insect infestation. Although these problems appear in all pet foods, it is more frequent in natural pet foods.

  • Keep products in their original bag.
  • Store bag in a bug-proof, tightly fitted lid container.
  • Do not store bags and boxes on a cement or garage floor (moisture picked up from the floors can lead to deterioration).
  • Rolll down tops of open bags (to prevent over-exposure to air).
With these simple steps, your Flint River Ranch products will stay fresh for the needs of your pets until your next shipment.

Food Shelf Life

Flint River Ranch pet food has a shelf life of about 6 months when unopened. Each bag has an expiration date on it, and, if stored properly, the food can be used until that date.

Puppy Feeding Guidelines

For the first year, you can usually feed puppies what they want to eat. Keep plenty of water available. Monitor their weight as they grow and reduce the amount fed, as necessary. Water can be mixed with the kibble for young puppies.

It is better to introduce super premium foods by first mixing with your dogs usual food. You should make the change gradually over 5-7 days by mixing the FRR food with the brand previously used. Start with a mixture of 10% - 15% FRR food, then increase the percentage of FRR food by 10% - 15% each day until the transition is complete. Without the gradual transition from the other brand to richer FRR food, pets may get upset stomachs and diarrhea.

Adult Dog Feeding Guidelines

For dogs less than 1 year old, refer to the Puppy Feeding Guidelines above.

Since the food is concentrated, there is more value with less food consumed. Feeding oven-baked foods require 20-25% less food than steam-extruded foods. Pet owners will find fewer odors and stool clean up. Dogs may require a little adjustment over a period of time to shrink their stomach and reduce their food intake. Lightly cooked vegetables of all types can help while the dog's system adjusts. Improper feeding is the greatest cause of a dog being overweight, not the quality of the food.

Feed your dog once or twice a day. Have plenty of fresh water available. Food requirements vary depending on climate, breed of dog and exercise activity. Feed an amount that will maintain you dog's weight. Following are suggested amounts:

Dog Weight Food per Day
10-20lbs 0.5 to 1.0 cup
20-40lbs 1.0 to 2.0 cups
40-60lbs 2.0 to 2.5 cups
60-80lbs 2.5 to 3.5 cups
80-100lbs 3.5 to 4.7 cups
>100lbs 4.7 to 5.0 cups

Don't try to speed the process by mixing a bag of each food together for a 50/50 mix and starting your pet on that. You and your pet may both be dissatisfied with the results.

Cat & Kitten Feeding Guidelines

Young kittens may be started on Flint River Ranch by mixing with a little warm water. Feed food dry as soon as the kitten's teeth are strong enough to chew hard food (8 to 10 weeks). Feed the kittens 3 times a day. After six months, change to twice a day.

Adult cats (older than 1 year) can be fed once or twice a day. This depends upon what keeps your cat happy. Your cat should be looking for food when the next meal is due. Teach them to eat at meal times. The amount your cat eats in 15-20 minutes is about the amount they should be fed at a meal. Adjust the food as you notice an increase or decrease in the animal's weight.

10-15 LB Cat - About 1cup/day

Fresh water should be available at all times. Maintaining fresh, clean water is as important for your cat as the type of food fed.
