Dog Food Answers

What should I do for loose stools in puppies and adult dogs?

Over the years, Flint River Ranch has had inquiries on puppy diarrhea. Being all-natural from quality ingredients and oven-baked, Flint River Ranch food is very rich, and some dogs have a more difficult time adjusting to the high nutrition level in the food. Be sure to introduce your pup slowly to the oven-baked kibbles, so that his system can adjust to the richness of the food. Our experience has been that the smaller the dog/breed, the more difficult it can be to adjust to a new food. Give it time and try not to shock the system. Incorporate blanched veggies with the kibble to provide bulk without over-feeding the kibble.

Why does Flint River Ranch oven-bake its dog foods?

Flint River Ranch canine formulas are slowly twice oven-baked under carefully controlled conditions and proper temperatures. In the oven-baking process, a small 2-inch biscuit is baked, moving slowly through the oven, then broken into smaller, irregular kibble.

What is the difference between oven-baked foods and the “other” method of cooking pet foods?

The baking process acts as a pre-digest of the kibble food by changing the molecules of raw starches into easy to digest dextrins. The result is less strain on the dog’s digestive system and a greater degree of food absorption.

Why are oven-baked foods more concentrated?

Since Flint River Ranch's food is concentrated, there is more value with less food consumed. Feeding FRR oven-baked food requires 20–25% less food be fed than steam-extruded products. Pet owners will find fewer odors and less prolific stools with Flint River Ranch foods.

What is the difference between extrusion and oven-baking?

The extrusion process involves steaming the ingredients as quickly as possible, usually less than three (3) minutes, then extruding it under extreme pressure though a metal die. This process expands the food with air creating a uniform shape. Extruding "puffs up" each piece of food, giving it a uniform shape. Some industry professionals believe that extruded foods can cause the condition known as "bloat."

Why does Flint River Ranch develop oven-baked kibble?

The small broken cookie crumb pieces of various sizes are the nature of an oven-baked product. This is, in part, what determines the premium quality and what is most easily digested by the dog. Each bag of kibble will have a wide range of sizes, from very small to 1/2 inch pieces. Food that is uniform size and shape is an extruded food. Flint River Ranch food scores in the high 90s for digestibility and palatability, while most extruded food is in the low to mid 80s on a scale of 100.

What is bloat?

Bloat is caused when food expands in the dog's system. There is no food expansion with Flint River Ranch oven-baked dog food. This can be easily seen if the same amount of extruded food and oven-baked food are placed in separate dishes and water added. You will see the extruded food puff-up, just like it would inside your pup's stomach.

How can bloat possibly be prevented?

We suggest that you feed a dry food that has added probiotics to aid in the digestion process. Feed a high-quality protein product and feed a broken, oven-baked kibble. We also suggest all dogs use an elevated feeder.

Should I feed my dog vegetables and fruit?

Vegetables are important; however, the amount contained in most commercial foods has little value other than advertising. Vegetables that can be fed raw include finely grated carrots, zucchini, alfalfa sprouts and parsley. Dogs enjoy whole raw carrots as treats as well.

Is oven-baked food more digestible?

Oven-baked food is concentrated and measures about 121 grams/cup, compared to most extruded foods at about 90-95 grams per cup. Therefore, in a one-cup, feeding you serve 25% more food and nutrition with an oven-baked product.

Does FRR food cause canine bladder stones?

Statements that Flint River Ranch dog food diets causes bladder stones in a very short period of time is contrary to the findings of industry pet nutritionists, researchers, consultants and the hundreds of published professionals in the pet care industry. All natural diets, like Flint River Ranch's, have a cleansing effect on the digestive system when first introduced. Stones and crystals that may have been stable can possibly be loosened or dislodged. Given time and proper all-natural diets, animals tend to heal themselves of this issues. Proper monitoring by your pet's health care professional is always supported.

Are there any issues with the use of canola oil in Flint River Ranch Fish & Potato formula?

Canola Oil is NOT Rapeseed. Rapeseed is not a word that can be used in the place of canola, which is a specific trademarked product. There are strict quality standards governing canola, and products that do not meet government standards cannot use this trademarked item. Canola is an oilseed crop from the Pacific Northwest, North Central and Southeast United States. Canola is approved by AAFCO as a Pet Food Ingredient in a publication by J. K. Daun and D. I. McGregor, and the the Candian Grain Commission Research Lab and other information is on file at the AAFCO Center for Veterinary Medicine, Food and Drug Commission. Canola Oil is also approved for all animal feed. Canola Oil has the lowest level of saturated fat (7%) compared to all other oils on the market today. Any Heath Guide and Lifestyle publication will recommend Canola Oil. In addition, it is excellent for baking, rich in Omega-3 fatty acids that may combat cholesterol and protect from heart disease. It is an excellent source of Vitamin E and helps prevent the formation of blood clots (it is high in monounsaturated fat, 58%, the kind that does not clog arteries). Along with Olive Oil, Canola Oil is the most heart-healthy of all vegetable oils as reported by Complete Book of Alternative Nutrition by Prevention Magazine Health series.

Menhaden Fish is a Herring-like fish found along the North Atlantic coast. It is an excellent source of protein, unsaturated fats, Omega 3 fatty acid for skin and coat.

Why does Flint River Ranch produce a "nugget," bite-sized dog food also?

Flint River Ranch Nugget is a little over 1/4-inch square in shape. It is the same recipe formula as FRR Original Dog Kibble. The nugget shape is also used for FRR Fish & Potato formula. Some pet owners feel the nugget shape is better for the dog's teeth and gums. Though they like the more uniform shape, there may still be broken pieces. The Nugget shape is oven-baked and is beneficial for most dogs of regular and large size. It is not recommended for toy or small dogs.

What is Millet?

Millet is a type of grain that can replace wheat. It is very easy to digest.

What are the health benefits from whole wheat flour? Isn’t it possible to substitute barley or alfalfa, which has a higher fiber and lower carbohydrate level?

While some alfalfa is used for fiber, a dog or a cat won’t benefit from a food with too much alfalfa. Barley is a good grain, but it’s not the quality of wheat. Wheat is one of the best grains for dog food. Flint River Ranch does not use flour as it is generally known. Instead, FRR uses whole grain, one part fine ground to hold the food together and another course ground for texture. If you do some more research on wheat, you will find that it is one of the best possible grains to use.

How much corn is in Flint River Ranch dog foods?

None. Corn is an excellent grain; however, it is more difficult to digest by both humans and dogs. Therefore, corn is not an ingredient in Flint River Ranch dog food.

Cat Food Answers

What is the pH factor of cat food?

Flint River Ranch's cat food pH factor is guaranteed to be below 6.4.

How much should I feed my cat?

Cat food should not be left out in the dish. Your cat should be looking for food when the next meal is due. Teach them to eat at meal times. They can be fed twice a day, and the amount eaten in 15-20 minutes is about the amount they should be fed at each meal.

Why does my cat stop eating?

It is not unusual for cats to refuse their regular food for several days. Cats, are carnivores and are meant to eat infrequently and fast between meals. If your cat has been eating a certain food for a period of time and all of a sudden stops eating, this does not mean the food is bad or the animal is ill - it may simply be the cat has changed its preference. Try an alternate formula and monitor his food and water intake. We also recommend that you consult your kitty's veterinary for any medical advice.

What is F.U.S.?

Feline Urological Syndrome (F.U.S.) is a condition caused by an accumulation of fine crystals within the bladder and urethra, based upon a substance called struvite - a crystalline compound of magnesium. Professionals don't know why some cats develop the problem, but two elements appear tied to the condition - Magnesium and Ash. Flint River Ranch cat food products are low in both items, helping promote a healthy urinary system and prevent the development of F.U.S..

What is F.L.U.T.D. and F.U.S.?

F.L.U.T.D. is Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease. F.U.S. is Feline Urological Syndrome.

How can a cat owner help prevent F.U.S.?

Low Ash and Magnesium are important in the prevention of F.U.S.. Gradually change the cat's diet to a more natural food over a period of time to allow for the cat to adjust. Flint River Ranch Cat diets have low ash and very balanced Magnesium levels.

Why does Flint River Ranch put beet pulp in cat food and not in dog food?

We use beet pulp in cat food because cats have a different digestive tract from dogs, and the beet pulp is a superior fiber source for cats to help move waste and hairballs through their system effectively and gently.

Is the cat hairball formula considered a meal on its own?

Yes, it is a very nutritious formula all to itself. We like to think that this formula is specialized for indoor cats.

Is a lower pH more acidic or alkaline?

A low pH factor means it is acidic. It has been found that the higher the pH (the more alkaline) the greater is the tendency for struvite crystals to form (and potentially developing into F.U.S.). High quality cat foods help keep the pH in the acidic range, helping to prevent struvite crystals from building up.

While it is a commonly-held belief that corn, wheat and other ingredients cause major allergies in dogs, the general population is considered quite low among dermatologists. Natural caramel color. What kind of natural color is this? Caramel color is usually considered an artificial color. What makes Flint River Ranch's natural?

Because FRR needs to qualify its label with state regulatory agencies and explain each step and reason why, it was determined by one state that the label could only be approved for sale in that state if Flint River Ranch listed the caramel as "natural." Caramel is a natural product, which Flint River Ranch uses to improve the gravy color. A small amount goes a long way, and when Flint River Ranch explained to the state that it was used for color so that a harmful dye would not have to be used, the state required that FRR list it on the label as natural caramel color.

Does Flint River Ranch use "organic chicken?

It is possible to put an organic chicken into tons of regular chicken meat and legally say it's organic, range-fed chicken. Some manufacturers take this option. While Flint River Ranch purchases as much organic chicken as possible, the company prefers to more correctly say it uses "human quality" chicken. The major volume of Flint River Ranch chicken is hormone free - however, it is not 100% hormone free. Like all Flint River Ranch ingredients, the company pays a premium price for the very best ingredients available.

What are Flint River Ranch's sources of grains?

Grains are purchased from major commercial suppliers like General Mills, fully tested and retested by labs. This testing insures the very best quality and reduces the possibility of toxic molds. Grain is cheaper when purchased direct from the farm; however, the risk of toxic mold is greater.

What is the definition of hypoallergenic?

Hypoallergenic means having a decreased tendency to provoke an allergic reaction.

What is Flint River Ranch's suggestion for fat cats and overweight dogs?

Humans and pets both have to push away from the table. Flint River Ranch finds many pet owners still feeding the amount of food they formally fed on less nutritious foods. With premium foods, it is best to feed 25% less. Pets, like humans, require a little adjustment over a period of time to shrink the stomach and reduce their food intake. During this period of change, add vegetables and simple grains of many types, including carrots, rice, potatoes, celery, pasta and green beans. This is great for your pet's health.

What should I do about soft stools?

Because premium food is very rich and has little in the way of useless fillers, some pets may have a softer stool during their transition. This is why we recommend mixing Flint River Ranch foods with the pet's usual food for a week or so to reduce the chance of soft stool. A premium food will start cleaning the pet's digestive tract, rather than just passing through the system. In time, you will have a firmer, much smaller stool. However, no pet should ever have to force out their stools. Plainly speaking, you want to look for warm, soft steamers. Your pet should be able to simply squat and expell their waste. Many manufactures use ingredients to virtually guarantee a hard stool for the consumer's satisfaction. This is for ease of switching between different formulas. Flint River Ranch does not suscribe to this practice; therefore, you may be confronted with a softer stool than with previous diets. Watch the food intake, ensure plenty of fresh water (prefereably filtered) is available to your pet, and allow enough time for proper transition to the new formulas. If loose stools continue past a few days or beyond a week, consult your pet's healthcare professional.

Flint River Ranch (FRR) is the manufacturer of our pet food products, and is a separate company from us.

FRR requires that all distributors display a "disclosure" statement on their Web site that indicates the site is not operated by FRR; the wording and placement of this "disclosure" are dictated by FRR. The statement simply means that our policies regarding pricing and refunds are not necessarily those of FRR. The prices that we show for our products are the prices you pay and no charges are added at checkout.

What is the shipping process?

Flint River Ranch ships from several regional warehouses across the U.S. This allows the company to provide customers with the freshest product available, in addition to distributing products more efficiently. Normal shipping periods are between 5 and 7 business days. On occasion, however, Flint River Ranch may need to ship from a regional warehouse that does not normally provide service to your area. This could possibly lengthen the normal shipping period. Also, orders placed on Thursdays and Fridays may not be handled by UPS until the following Monday, which, again, could lead to longer delivery timeframes.

What is Flint River Ranch's product shelf-life?

Flint River Ranch production runs weekly, and product is delivered to distribution warehouses within 3 days to a few weeks of manufacture. FRR's overall inventory turns three (3) times every month, which means that it has was manufactured 7 to 8 days prior to shipping from the West coast and 16 days being shipped from the East coast. It is almost too fresh to feed. Flint River Ranch formulas feed much better when they are at least 30 days old and have had a chance to age and oxidize slightly. When properly stored, FRR products can be fed for about 11 months; however, the ideal period is 5 to 6 months. After six months, the product value declines because the extended exposure to air tends to over-oxidize the formulas and make them stale. There is a BEST IF USED BY date on all products, which fall into the 5 to 6 month from cook date. However, FRR formulas can continue to be fed with confidence another 4 to 6 months from this date, provided that adaquate storage methods are used and extremes in temperature and humidity are avoided.

What about moths, bugs and insects?

The heat in the manufacturing process destroys any potential insect eggs that might be attached to grain after the cleaning process. If food is not stored properly, or if the bag is left open, it will attract all types of ants, bugs and flying insects that lay eggs in the rich food. In a very short time, these eggs can turn into worms and moths. Bug and insect attraction is greatly increased with warmer summer weather and high humidity when stored in a garage or outdoor shed. This problem appears in all pet food; however, it is more frequent in n atural pet foods because they normally do not use chemical perservatives (some of which not only preserve the food but also act as an insecticide). Pet owners with worm or moth problems should consider changing their storage method. All pet food should be stored in its original product bag in a cool, dry location. Keep the bag well closed to reduce the chance of insect infestation.

What is your recommended food storage method?

Like any dry food, pet food must be stored in a cool, dry place and sealed to reduce the chance of insect infestation. Pet food needs to be stored off the ground or garage floor. Food stored in air-tight containers will sweat. Natural foods attract moisture which can cause the foods to mold.
